Stuck on (in) you: Constipated. by Douglas

constipation-2Vacations, new environments, working around new people and changes in diet often result in constipation. There are several ways to address this challenge, at the front end, or back end (no pun intended). The following are listed in order from the most to least preferred approaches.

  1. Walk. Increase bowel muscle activity by walking.
  2. Water intake. Increasing water consumption often works to soften stool.
  3. Fiber intake. Consume more fruit and vegetables. Consider adding cereal to your breakfast. Lastly, drink 1 -2 teaspoons of psyllium husk powder mixed with four ounces of water before going to bed.
  4. OTC pharmaceutical products. Consider polyethylene glycol based products; read active ingredients in product.
  5. OTC laxatives. Biscodyl and Senna based products may generally be used safely for a few days. Overuse can result in dehydration via pseudo-diarrhea.
  6. If persistent, in spite of your best efforts, see your physician.

You are what you eat, drink, etc. | Detox yourself? by Douglas.

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

You are what you eat, drink, breath and absorb into your system in any detoxmanner via consumption, work or ambient atmosphere in which you live. Unfortunately, whether by choice (e.g., smoking) or environmental contamination, our bodies are subject to exposure to numerous chemicals that are not healthy for us.

We can rid ourselves of some of the offending agents acutely via coughing, sneezing, the body’s excretory systems, phagocytosis (white blood cell work) and liver/bile detoxification. In the event of acute excessive exposures, there may be some medical interventions that we mey use to trap or flush a portion of the toxicants. However,  the clinical objective (and expectation) is to move these patients from toxic (and critical) to exposed, but minimally symptomatic. In most cases, only symptoms are being treated. The majority of “poisoning” by industrial toxins is not treatable and we simply attempt to avoid and minimize net exposure effects.  The effets of exposure may be completely reversibe if the body has the ability to manage the toxin and heal itself. Permanent damage follows exposure to deleterious materials in excess of our bodies’ abilities to defend themselves.

What happens if our bodies cannot effectively capture, process and discharge the offending agents? If the agent is voluminous and poisonous, you die. If the exposure is less voluminous and poisonous, with treatment you may be able to limit systemic damage. Given a minor exposure or time limited cumulative trauma, you may be able to fend off acute effects and there may be very limited organ dysfunction or change in tissues.

Regarding abnormal tissue changes, only a limited number of histopathology data types demonstrate that body tissues actually incorporate toxins into their matrices (e.g., lungs and fiber/silica/coal disease, or liver and metals). Otherwise, there is no medical evidence that the liver, brain, nerves, lungs or other tissues store the chemicals to which they are exposed, so as to make the chemicals available to be released via  appropriate agents. There is some literature support for the slow release of circulating toxins from dental amalgams.  As such, replacing old filling has resulted in neuropsychological benefits in numerous patients. However, there is no evidence that microscopic amounts of material or chemicals are bound in otherwise inactive cell vacuoles or entrapped in tissue pockets accessible by blood flow that may extract the offending agents if treated with some attractant or binding agent or if we are induced into excessive sweating or diuresis (excessive urination).

Flush yourself regularly to regulate your bowels for a healthy feeling. However, you cannot fully “detoxify” yourself via products that you consume, in which you soak or apply to your feet, or by induction of excessive perspiration or urination with or without complementary agents (e.g., niacin).

So, watch what you eat, drink, breath and absorb into your system in any manner via consumption, work and via the ambient atmosphere related to where you have chosen to live.

acai-berriesWarnings on Acai Berry Online Offers Amplify Watchdog Group Says Online Acai Credit Card Rip-Offs Are Reaching New Levels By SUSAN DONALDSON JAMES March 23, 2009 30. See story on “Good Morning America.”

” The ads are everywhere now: acai for weight loss, acai for sexual dysfunction, acai for cancer, acai with a free trial that can cost hundreds of dollars and leave you on hold for hours trying to stop more charges. A warning has been issued on questionable online sales of acai berry. The growing problem of questionable acai sales on the Internet has reached proportions never before seen by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, according to David Schardt, senior nutritionist for the center. Today, the attorney general of Connecticut, Richard Blumenthal, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest will issue a warning about credit card schemes peddling supplements made from the acai berry.

If its too good to be true, its probably not true. The berries are unlikely to precipitate the conditions suggested by the title of this blog entry. However, they are also very unlikely to bring about most of the health benefits promoted. While any increase in fruit and fiber to the diet of some may be a grand improvement in their general consumption and health plan, these berries and their many wrongfully  espoused health benefits are clogging the internet self healthcare product ad space. I hope that the charlatans scammers will soon be on the run.

Help your colon. Cleanse, detoxify, revive it and yourself. by Douglas

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

colonflush3If you considered your body analogously to a pipe system, a radiator, or a computer system, you initially wish to “flush and dump” to make your clean up complete. Colon flushing, secondly, like pipes with scale and corrosion, radiators with build-ups and deposits or drives with persistent hidden files, requires more aggressive intervention for the bad residuals. However, retained undesirable bacteria, lesions, polyps, and parasites are health challenges beyond the effectiveness of colon cleansing products that you can obtain on-line or at a brick and mortar stores.
The stomach and small intestine have already performed a thorough job of digesting and absorbing materials before they reach mid-colon. As such, to a large degree, you have already sufficiently “poisoned” yourself by the time the remainder reaches the storage end of the large intestine. A thorough colon flush with cleansing/detoxifying products primarily functions to hasten the transit time of waste materials out of the colon. There is little objective data to demonstrate that significantly greater bowel movement frequencies lessen absorption of undesirable materials in a measurable way.

Do not be fooled by excessive marketing hype and testimonials; thousands of customers can be wrong. No colon cleanse product is going to remove all of your retained neurotoxins, heavy metals, and adherent parasites, simultaneously healing your liver, gallbladder and kidneys. If they could, the manufacturers would cite the relevant studies along with the plethora of testimonials. When a product emerges that is coupled with test kits that allow you to collect samples for meaningful, reproducible toxin status testing before and after product use, then everyone should step up with money in hand.

Persistent blood in stools warrants more care than a colon flush. Likewise, unremitting GI symptoms including excessive gas, relentless constipation or diarrhea, and/or very oddly colored, textured, fatty or foul-smelling stools should be investigated by a physician.

But, some people just have very poor bowel movement frequency to complement their poor dietary habits. Moreover, many people experience marked improvement in their sense of well-being simply via thoroughly “emptying” themselves. As such, if your digestive transit time is slow, and you just cannot get the right combination of water, fruits, vegetables and exercise that works to regulate you, then a complete colon flush with these “additives” can help clear your system.

Why complete colon flushing and colon detoxification? by Douglas

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
colonflush2

In the past 10 years, approximately a million North Americans have tried a thorough colon flush. The usual basis of product endorsements is the knowledge that in a modern world we are all exposed to thousands of chemicals daily by way of our air, food (including beverages), medicines, and water and during work activities. In as much as we have chemical industries and we find new ways to process our food daily, there are no shortages of opportunities to insult our physiology. Organizations like the EPA, NIOSH, OSHA, the FDA and the USDA are supposed to keep our exposures nominal. However, their efforts are frequently compromised by the work of lobbyists and political compromises to maintain profitable industries.

Research clearly identifies that we are incapable of eliminating all toxins from our bodies. With “complete colon flushing” an impossibility, many people suffer significant health consequences from our unhealthy environments. The targeted organs may be the lungs, liver, kidneys or any other system that acts as the means of entrance of the materials into our systems, carries it throughout our systems, processes the materials, stores substances, or excretes waste. Numerous substances simply accumulate in our bodies (e.g., in fat cells) and remain in storage until slowly released or used otherwise in the system.

What can we do about it? Some of our internal pollution can be controlled by the choices that we make regarding product consumption. Other pollutants are simply foisted upon us because of lack of alternatives (e.g., air quality, municipal water). We may choose to bathe and shower. We can avoid smoking. We can adjust our diets to extent that products are available and within our budgets. We may be very conservative regarding medicinal intervention. However, what about that which still passes through our conscientious filters? Can we perform an internal cleansing to address it? Do we need internal cleansing?

Symptom groups generally have more than one possible cause. I would not insult you by suggesting that if you have a particular set of symptoms, your body needs a flushing and if not, you are fine. A better measure is the existence of normal urinary function and bowel movements. If our bodies needed everything they take in, we would have no need for either waste removal process. However, these two processes, with the help of the liver, filter waste and excess to the best of their abilities.

We are all exposed to thousands of chemicals daily by way of our air, food, medicines, water and during work activities. Aside from prudent nutrition, and other personal habits, we help our systems by helping push the pollutants out. First, drink plenty of fresh water (at least 64 oz. daily). Secondly, keep your bowel movements regular. Thirdly, you may consider helping your colon. Cleanse it occasionally, to the extent that you are able.

8 tips for a complete colon flush. by Douglas

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

flushing-the-colonComplete colon flush products should increase the frequency of your bowel movements within the first week. Your bowel movements become more consistent and comfortable. You may feel trimmer, less bloated and notice more energy within the first week, fast.

Colon flush prudence suggests consideration of your personal sensitivity to individual ingredients in these products. Additionally, since the formulas affect the digestive system, make sure that you consult with your physician if you are currently taking medications that may be eliminated from your system too briskly for optimal effect.

Bowel movement appearance and texture should change initially as old, retained materials evacuate completely. Colon flushing will normalize your bowel movements as your diet improves and the content of your movements become more regular. A gentle colon cleansing should not interrupt your life or cause embarrassing sudden, uncontrollable urges. In general, this should be balanced with good dietary habits, so that you may find that you engage in this regimen only quarterly.

1. Drink plenty of water. Eight to ten glasses a day helps to keep your overall digestive system flushed and stool softer.

2. Eliminate alcohol. It is irritating to the intestinal system and demonstrated to be a precursor to colonic cancer.

3. Eat small to moderate portions more frequently throughout the day to avoid overloading your digestive system.

4. Eat multiple smaller meals to optimize the ratio of target food volume to availability of digestive enzymes.

5. Eat at a slower pace. Increased chewing per swallow more effectively digests your food and increases satiety (sense of adequate fullness) with smaller volumes.

6. Exercise regularly to stimulate intestinal muscles so they will work more efficiently.

7. Avoid nicotine use. Nicotine increases acidity in your stomach, causing digestive discomfort, not to mention the other health risk to your intestinal tract and other systems in your body.

8. Consult your physician regarding medications that you must use and how their absorption may be reduced by decreased transit time associated with improved bowel function.

Make your attention to your digestive system effective and thorough. Colon flushing in the correct manner will be good for your health.

Constipated? Cleanse your colon. by Douglas

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

modern-toiletThere are numerous reasons for performing a complete colon flush, and constipation is one of them. Constipation is a common symptom, but often goes unrecognized. The most common medical definitions are related to the frequency and performance of bowel movements. The frequency of movements can vary from two to three times daily to once every 2 – 3 days, the definition varying by individual. In general, prolonged frequency, diminished volume and difficult passage are all basic elements of the definition.

Chronic constipation may be psychologically disturbing. Additionally, chronic psychological problems may cause abnormal bowel habits. The perspective of symptoms of constipation for a week to two weeks depends upon where it is being discussed. If it comes up in a conversation amongst family and friends, it is perfectly reasonable to consider self-care. If you bother to take your issue to your physician, s/he may feel obligated to consider a colonic obstruction requiring thorough evaluation for major obstruction, intestinal infection, and intestinal neurological dysfunction.

Self-reported constipation is a very common gastrointestinal symptom in the United States. Up to five percent of the population describes episodes of constipation occurring between fifty percent to almost constantly in their lives. In the United States, females more frequently self-report constipation and are more frequently hospitalized with issues related to constipation than males. However, women generally self-report a slightly higher stool frequency and may simply be more aware of changes in body function

In the U.S., there is a tendency to decreased constipation amongst ethnic/cultural groups that do not a have a westernized diet. Additionally, the prevalence of constipation increases dramatically in adults older than 65 years. This finding is probably associated most with dietary changes, use of medications and reduction in exercise.

The constipated often self-medicate with a variety of over-the-counter laxatives. Many laxatives can be irritating to the GI system or habit-forming. Although they may address the apparent, immediate problem, the causal factors may not have been recognized.

There are numerous reasons for performing a complete colon flush, and constipation is one of them. Constipation is a common symptom, and if chronic, it deserves to have its origin thoroughly evaluated. When you have not kept up with a reasonable dietary, water consumption and exercise regimen, respond accordingly and make your response complete. Colon flushing, along with a return to better habits is appropriate initial management.

Constipation: Evaluate your need for a complete colon flush. by Douglas

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

constipationConstipation occurs much more often than we believe. Numerous medical studies have noted that basing the diagnosis of constipation on responses to patient questions results in marked under-reporting of the condition. The under-reporting may be related to patients not wishing to discuss bowel habits or not being clear about the definition of “normal.”

Defining normal for individual bowel habits should include a detailed history of usual patterns of defecation, including frequency of movements, descriptions of the stools, the need or absence of need to strain, time it takes to sit for completion, any symptoms that occur with or around passage of stools, and frequency of deviations from the pattern.

Consider any issues that may contribute to constipation. Identify regular dietary habits such as fiber and water consumption. An excessively calcium rich diet may be constipating. The diuretic effects (increasing frequency and volume of urine) of some beverages (e.g., coffee, tea, beer) can deplete water needed to help in the transit of waste materials from our bodies.

Note use of enemas, or any other products use to enhance regularity. Laxatives, if used too often, will cause diminished normal intestinal muscular activity, resulting in rebound constipation. Although laxatives are frequently used to treat constipation, chronic laxative use becomes habit-forming and may lead to the development of a dilated non-contractile colon. The use of narcotics (e.g., codeine, hydrocodone), antipsychotic agents, thyroid hormone supplements, some cardiac medications (e.g., calcium channel blockers) and other similar medications reduce gastric motility. Medicinal diuretics likewise decrease available water to the colon. Document use of iron supplements and non-magnesium antacids.

Be aware of concurrent problems such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, peri-anal infections and peri-anal skin sensitivity. People frequently avoid bowel movements to limit aggravation of symptoms related to these conditions. Numerous other medical conditions, physical, endocrinological and neurological, absent adverse effects of treatments may limit bowel muscular function, and slow transit times. Moreover, take persistent rectal bleeding seriously and pursue professional evaluation.

The most influential factor on bowel habits is exercise. Exercise stimulates activity in the intestine, promoting regular bowel movements. As such, always look at exercise habits in relation to evaluating constipation.

Numerous medical studies have noted under-reporting of this condition. Constipation is a common symptom, and if chronic, it deserves to have its origin thoroughly evaluated. However, if it is only an occasional issue for you, particularly when you have not kept up with a reasonable dietary, water consumption and exercise regimen, then respond accordingly. Make your response complete. Colon flushing, along with a return to better habits is reasonable self-care.

Prevent colon cancer: Seven simple ways to prevent this disease. by Douglas

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

colon-imageIn the US, colon and rectal cancers combine as the third most common cancers in both genders (sexes). The American Cancer Society estimates that about 150,000 new cancer cases of these types will be identified annually in the U.S., with more than one million annual cases internationally, including the United States.

Formal medical literature usually does not cite causes. As cancers develop slowly, medical literature usually only acknowledges that there are conditions associated with particular cancers and these associated conditions precede the development of the cancers. The conditions or “factors” include genetics, living in particular locations, being male or female, being of a particular age, being of a particular ethnic group, having been exposed to certain materials, having another disease or engaging in particular personal habits. Having, engaging in, being exposed to, or being associated with these factors increases your risk for development of some cancers.

Regarding colon cancer, risk factors include age, tobacco and alcohol use, particular dietary elements, inflammatory bowel disease, genetics (frequent occurrence of the disease in family members), and the occurrence of polyps in your colon.

What can you do about it?

There is no reason for me to discuss gender (sex) and genetics/ethnicity, as you are what you are. The incidence of colon cancer like many cancers is greater in the older population, and you cannot control age. However, you can control making quality life decisions early in your life and you may continue to follow up on those decisions.

Seven factor-base decisions you can make to decrease colon cancer risk.

1. Avoid tobacco. Tobacco use is associated with a higher risk of colon cancer. It appears to stimulate focal, abnormal blood vessel activity in the colon.

2. Avoid alcohol consumption. Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for intestinal cancer, including colon cancer as a chemical irritant.

3. Avoid processed meat consumption. Curing, smoking and flavor enhancing processed meats frequently results in formation of nitrosamine compounds in the meats, with high potential for adverse affects on the gastrointestinal system.

4. Decrease dietary fat consumption. Consumption of high volumes of beef fat that is associated with increased risk of colon cancer.

5. Consume more grain and fiber regularly. Diets higher in rye bran and dry beans have been found to be preventive of intestinal polyp formation.

6. Eat leafy green vegetables or take a multi-B vitamin regularly. Lower intake of total folate (vitamin B9) has been associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer.

7. See your doctor regarding persistent intestinal problems. Moreover, at age 50 consider colonoscopy if polyp disease and colon cancer runs in the family.

Lastly, consider colon cleansing if your intestinal system does not function very efficiently to clear you. Until your diet and exercise habits are sufficient to clear your system briskly, frequently and fully, an occasional complete colon flush may help evacuate some offending dietary factors more efficiently.
